Product Details
Agate, is a distinctly banded variety of Chalcedony, is a variety of Quartz gemstones composed of layers of quartz, sometimes of different colors. When it is concentrically banded (often in rather wild patterns) it is called by the subvaritey name "agate." When it is in flat layers/bands it is called by the subvariety name "onyx." Agate usually occurs as rounded nodules or veins in rock such as volcanic lava. The layers of quartz are often concentric. The composition of agate varies greatly, but silica is always predominant, usually with alumina and oxide of iron. Agate comes in most colors. There are  several types of agate. Common ones are: blue lace agate, moss agate, tree agate and petrified wood.

Product Details
Agate is the banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Agate is the most varied and popular type of Chalcedony, having many varieties on its own. Although the pattern on every Agate is unique, the locality of an Agate will provide resemblances in banding style and color, thus lending many Agates with a geographic prefix. Some examples are Laguna Agate (named after Ojo Laguna, Mexico) or Botswana Agate (after the African country of Botswana). Other variety names used connote specific colors or patterns, such as Fire Agate or Eye Agate. There are many variety names of Agate that are generally used by collectors and dealers, but there is also an abundance of variety names that are made up by dealers to describe a locality or other habit. The varieties section in this page will only list well-known names that are commonly used.

Agate most often forms in rounded
nodules or knobs which need to be sliced open to bring out the internal pattern hidden in the stone. Most Agate is ugly in its natural state; specimens must be polished to bring out their full beauty. Most Agate sold to collectors have already been treated, in the form of tumbled stones or polished slabs. A popular collectors form of Agate is nodule or geode
of Agate sliced in the middle into two polished slices.

Agate often forms the lining of
geodes, with crystalline Quartz crystals on the layer on top of the Agate. The Agate will sometimes completely fills the void of a geode cavity, forming an Agate nodule
(sometimes improperly called an "Agate Geode"). Most Agate on the market comes from these nodules.

Agate is often artificially dyed to enhance its colors. This is especially true of Agate from Brazil. Bright neon colors such as blue and red are usually indicators of a dyed Agate.
